Perhaps only Spike Lee could make a dignified yet extremely funny comedy-drama about phone sex. Theresa Randle (Bad Boys) is the title character, a hard-working actress who becomes addicted to this peculiar form of safe sex (the movie is verbal, not physical, in that department) at a high-class New York agency. Throughout the film, Girl 6 (she's unnamed beyond this) sports a dazzling array of new looks, hairstyles, and clothes. Randle radiates every step of the way. Lee even delivers on fantasy elements when Girl 6 finds herself in a send-up of blaxploitation films and a keen lampoon of The Jeffersons (the three-minute sequence is better than any planned TV-to-movie film that may come along). Revelations about Girl 6's life are brought out through her ex-husband (Isaiah Washington), who, in his very flawed but honest way, plans to reunite with her. Better yet are conversations with the n...

This family drama begins in a gritty Chicago neighborhood with a jobless, hopeless mother (Alfre Woodard) pouring her efforts into the bottle and various drugs rather than her troubled daughter and wise-beyond-his-years son. But the movie soon heads south, as the title suggests, when Mom and kids are sent to live with an uncle for the summer. Their lives change, of course, but that's the only predictable aspect of this 107-minute film. First-time director Maya Angelou brings her poetic sense to Myron Goble's elegant script, and the performances are uniformly excellent, most notably the always superb Woodard, Al Freeman Jr. as her uncle, and Mary Alice as her mother. Wesley Snipes takes a break from his action career to do some acting as Freeman's son, and the late Esther Rolle is haunting in the last portrayal of her career. The film's touch of mystery is provided by one of its most deva...

Amazon.com In January of 1999, the world's greatest basketball player announced his retirement from professional basketball, citing the lack of challenges for him from the game. No wonder. During his roughly 12-year career, Michael Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, captured the MVP award several times, broke various records, and invented a kind of graceful, deeply competitive athleticism that fans had never seen before. Charles Barkley claimed he was not a role model, but Michael did, and the best of his career is well captured in this three-video set, Michael Jordan: The Ultimate Collection. The earliest tape, Come Fly with Me, chronicles Michael's youth in North Carolina, his college years, and an early career with the Chicago Bulls. It's a fun token for fans who want to remember the squeaky-clean Michael who sported a thin layer of hair on his green head. Air Ti...
